Urban Choreography

June. 2019

ESTU Department of Architecture

Urban Design Studio

Beyond the static realm of brick and mortar,
Eskisehir Reborn emerges as a theoretical praxis,
a dynamic laboratory for interrogating the liminal
spaces at the urban periphery. It transcends the
mere assemblage of structures, transforming
into a performative landscape, a choreographed
interplay of ecology and social interaction. Here,
the hegemony of density is not vanquished, but
challenged and reconfigured, yielding a tapestry
of urban experiences woven from expansive green
expanses and carefully modulated built form. This
project becomes a crucible for experimentation, a
platform for rethinking the relationship between the city
and nature, humans and the environment. The Porsuk
River ceases to be a static backdrop, instead weaving
itself into the narrative, its fluidity echoing within
the design’s intricate choreography. The “Spanish
Steps” descend not just in meters, but in conceptual
layers, blurring the lines between urban and river,
transforming passive observation into active
engagement. The very act of descent becomes
a performative ritual, a pilgrimage towards the
river’s embrace. At the heart of this choreography
lies a profound interrogation of density. The urban
fabric loosens, exhaling into expansive green lungs
that offer respite and recreation. These verdant
expanses are not mere ornamental appendages, but
active catalysts for social interaction. They weave a
labyrinth of pathways, inviting chance encounters
and fostering impromptu connections. The very
act of navigating these green arteries becomes a
performative engagement with the city, a dance
of discovery and connection. Eskisehir Reborn is
not content with mere sustainability; it aspires to
ecological symbiosis. The design embraces the
river’s rhythms, mimicking its natural filtration
processes through engineered wetlands and bioswales. The built form integrates seamlessly with the
landscape, incorporating green roofs and vertical
gardens that blur the boundaries between structure
and nature. This symbiosis extends beyond the
physical, fostering a sense of ecological citizenship
among residents and weaving environmental
stewardship into the very fabric of the project.

	The Dorm

Dec. 2020

ESTU Department of Architecture

Graduation Project

Emerging from a critical interrogation of traditional
dormitory models, this project reimagines campus
living at Eskişehir Technical University through a
confluence of user-centered design and spatial phenomenology. Drawing upon student questionnaires
as empirical data, it disrupts the static dormitory
typology and reconfigures the self-contained site
as a catalyst for social interaction and belonging.
Rather than reinforcing hierarchical divisions of
public and private, the design employs a porous
glass atrium and dynamic facade as membranes
of permeability, fostering a continuous dialogue
between individual and collective experience. Lush
landscaping, strategically integrated within the built
environment, acts as a living tapestry, inviting both
energetic exploration and introspective solitude,
further deepening the student-environment nexus.
Amphitheater and courtyard spaces rise as pulsating
nodes of connection, where diverse identities
converge and forge new narratives, enriching the
academic ecosystem. At the core of this design lies
a commitment to dynamism and customization,
empowering residents to reclaim agency over their
living experience and sculpt spaces that nurture
profound connections within a tapestry of diverse
aspirations. From the vibrant ground floor, a nexus
of exchange and engagement, to the personalized
hallways transformed into micro-communities,
every element is crafted to orchestrate encounters
and cultivate a profound sense of belonging within
this microcosm of student life.

Open Dialogue: Cafe Agora

June. 2016

ESTU Department of Architecture

Construction Drawings Studio
This project invites you to consider an object not merely
as a side table, but as a portal to a deeper understanding
of material, nature, and our place within the intricate
tapestry of existence. Through the lens of Object-Oriented
Ontology, the project explores the inherent vibrancy of
wood, where imperfections become the language of its
story. Knots, cracks, and color variations are not blemishes,
but rather whispers of the forest, etching a narrative of
time, growth, and resilience. This sculptural side table
transcends its function, becoming a tangible manifestation
of a philosophy that challenges traditional notions of design.
It embraces the object's autonomy, its unique history, and agency independent of human intention. The wood
pulsates with an energy that transcends mere materiality,
inviting us to connect with its inherent vitality and engage
in a dialogue that extends beyond utility. Sculptural Side
Table seeks to spark a conversation about the profound
influence that seemingly ordinary objects can have on our
lives. It challenges us to reconsider our relationship with the
material world, encouraging us to embrace the inherent
stories and vibrancy that reside within each object. As the
side table accumulates scratches and dents over time, these
marks become markers of its lived experience, a testament

Sympoietic Thinking

December. 2024
Workshop + Learning Design

with Eda Adıgüzel

This workshop was guided by a central pedagogical question: How can documentation reveal agency, productivity, and coexistence within urban environments? Designed as an experiment in collective learning across differences, the workshop brought together first-year and fourth-year undergraduate students from architecture, interior architecture, and industrial design. The learning structure emerged directly from my pedagogical observations in both first-year and fourth-year studio settings, where openness to exploration and technical proficiency often operate in parallel but rarely intersect. I intentionally structured the workshop around mixed-experience teams, pairing two first-year students, whose curiosity and speculative thinking shaped early inquiry, with two fourth-year students, whose technical competence supported materialization and testing. Rather than treating experience level as a hierarchy, the workshop reframed it as a shared pedagogical resource, enabling learning to circulate multi-directionally through peer interaction and guided collaboration.
The conceptual framework of the workshop was informed by relational and posthuman theories articulated by Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, particularly their critiques of binary distinctions such as nature and culture or human and non-human. At the same time, the learning design drew on situated and experiential theories of learning, treating knowledge as something that emerges through participation in context rather than abstract instruction. In this sense, the workshop functioned as a temporary community of practice, where dialogue, mediation, and coexistence were not theoretical themes but conditions deliberately designed and sustained within the learning environment. Using Yıldız Park as a living laboratory, students collectively observed and documented diverse life practices along designated walking routes. I coordinated a process in which these observations were recorded through drawing, mapping, photography, and notation, and subsequently translated into three-dimensional models that articulated shared expressions of collective existence. This process aligned with experiential learning approaches in which movement, perception, and reflection are intertwined,
and documentation functions as a mode of inquiry rather than a representational endpoint.

By foregrounding documentation as an active design practice, students were encouraged to recognize symbiotic relationships between human and non-human actors and to integrate these dynamics into speculative design propositions. Throughout the process, design was positioned as a dialogic act, resonating with critical pedagogical traditions that understand learning as co-produced through interaction rather than transmitted unidirectionally. In my role as a teaching assistant at Bahçeşehir University, I assumed responsibility for both the intellectual framing and the coordination of the workshop, from structuring group dynamics to facilitating collective reflection and evaluation. Working closely with students, I cultivated a learning environment in which theory and experience continuously informed one another. This workshop strengthened my understanding of learning design as the intentional coordination of diversity, dialogue, and collective making, and reinforced my commitment to pedagogical models that foreground relational thinking and shared agency within design education.

[Sense] Scape

January. 2025
PhD Research Project

Sense-scape
is a design tool that investigates the interplay between architecture, sensory
perception, and storytelling, rooted in contemporary theoretical discourses. It
builds upon Jacques Rancière’s concept of the distribution of the sensible,
examining how architecture structures sensory hierarchies that dictate
inclusion and exclusion within spatial and social frameworks. Maurice
Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception provides a critical lens,
emphasizing the body’s centrality in spatial experience and the relational
dynamics between sensory stimuli and perception. Additionally, Derrida’s
notions of absence and presence inform the game’s exploration of spatial
thresholds, while Deleuze’s Logic of Sensation shapes its focus on affective
atmospheres and the reconfiguration of sensory interactions. The game
reinterprets the lexicon as a dynamic, multisensory methodology. Unlike
traditional lexical tools, Sense-scape introduces a sound dictionary composed
of auditory fragments and a texture dictionary encompassing diverse tactile
materials, enabling players to engage with spaces through hybrid sensory
experiences. Players navigate a game board that represents six urban fragments
of Istanbul, each chosen for its historical, cultural, and sensory richness. As
they encounter commands like selecting texture or sound cards, telling stories,
or responding to questions, participants are prompted to create layered,
embodied narratives that reveal the aesthetic, tectonic, and political
dimensions of architecture. The fiction of the game integrates these
theoretical frameworks into a participatory, collaborative experience. It
encourages players to reflect on architecture’s role in mediating sensory
relationships and reimagining the boundaries of perception. By combining
sensory engagement with storytelling, Sense-scape transforms familiar spaces
into sites of critical inquiry, enabling players to uncover hidden layers of
meaning and challenge conventional architectural narratives. This project
exemplifies a transformative approach to design research, bridging theory and
practice to explore architecture’s capacity to shape human experience in
profound, multisensory ways.

	Memory in Motion

March. 2022
Individual Research Project
Inspired by Henri Bergson’s seminal work “Matter
and Memory”, this project explores the intricate
relationship between the concepts of space, time,
and materiality through an experimental model.
Through interdisciplinary exploration, this project
posits that architecture serves as a tangible repository
of collective memory, a tangible manifestation of
humans’ shared experiences and cultural heritage.
Drawing on Bergson’s concept of pure duration, this project argues that architectural spaces possess an inherent temporality that can evoke and shape human memories. The experimental model,
consisting of two plexiglass panels separated,
features pores through which plexiglass rods of
varying lengths are inserted. These rods, each marked
with a red plus at the end, represent the dynamic
interplay between memory traces and the physical
environment. Furthermore, the red pluses at the ends
of the rods represent the persistence of memory and
its ability to transcend physical boundaries and endure
through the passage of time. The varying lengths of
the plexiglass rods symbolize the diverse temporal
dimensions embedded within architectural structures,
each capturing a unique moment in time. Just as
Bergson’s concept of durée réelle suggests that time
is not a linear progression but rather a continuous
flow, the architectural model signifies that memory
is not static but rather a dynamic process, constantly
evolving and adapting. This project, with its interplay
of space, time, and materiality, catalyzes interdisciplinary dialogue, inviting collaboration
between architects, philosophers, historians, and
memory studies scholars. In conclusion, by examining
the profound connections between our built
environment and our collective memory, this project
seeks to redefine the role of architecture in shaping
our understanding of the past, present, and future.

	Sculptural
Side Table

Dec. 2023Individual Research Project

This project invites you to consider an object not
merely as a side table, but as a portal to a deeper
understanding of material, nature, and our place
within the intricate tapestry of existence. Through
the lens of Object-Oriented Ontology, the project
explores the inherent vibrancy of wood, where
imperfections become the language of its story.
Knots, cracks, and color variations are not blemishes,
but rather whispers of the forest, etching a narrative
of time, growth, and resilience. This sculptural side
table transcends its function, becoming a tangible
manifestation of a philosophy that challenges
traditional notions of design. It embraces the object's autonomy, its unique history, and
agency independent of human intention. The
wood pulsates with an energy that transcends mere
materiality, inviting us to connect with its inherent
vitality and engage in a dialogue that extends
beyond utility. Sculptural Side Table seeks to spark
a conversation about the profound influence that
seemingly ordinary objects can have on our lives.
It challenges us to reconsider our relationship with
the material world, encouraging us to embrace the
inherent stories and vibrancy that reside within
each object. As the side table accumulates scratches
and dents over time, these marks become markers

Syn-Oikos

May 2022
ITU Architectural Design MSci
Project 1_with Mine Öztürk and Selen Çatal

The categorical distinction between nature and
culture, the unbalanced relationship established
by architecture, begins with humans’ first construction, building a shelter to separate themselves
from nature and its forces from the “other.” The first
shelters were shaped around an approach that
creates boundaries and is centered on human
needs by creating an internal-external distinction. In
this research, the fact that the borders established
by modern architecture, which is considered the
architecture of purity in the literature, are not only
visible and perceived, together with the environmental conditions and the inclusion of the living
thing in materiality, is discussed. To see the buildings
in which humans live not as solid objects but as
areas of interaction, it is necessary to be aware of
the potential of the structural components that are
thought to form the boundary, which are permeable
and porous. By moving away from the interior-exterior distinction, the architectural object that allows
nature to infiltrate with the pores it contains will
be a part of ecology by emphasizing the unity of
different beings. With the findings of the research
conducted through Atlas, an experimental area
was established within the framework of the rules
determined by evaluating the five principles and
architectural components that establish Villa Savoye
and the relations of living things with the pores of
different scales. In this context, “syn-oikos” offers
architects an experimental field where they can
practice design for different users with Villa Savoye’s
porous structural components. To understand the
actions, reactions, and interactions of doing and
living together, the experimental field opens a new
life to discussion through symbiosis.

Figure 3. Houses are places where different lives are established and settled in different temporalities. It legitimizes not only human life but also the
existence of many animate and inanimate individuals and defines a new life through symbiosis. This drawing aims to read different togetherness through
architectural elements and to make an architectural object’s life visible.
